Almost all of the people retire. While some do it early to chase the goals they have set for themselves, sometimes folks take their time to quit. In virtually all the cases, fishing involves dropping the hook in the pond and waiting until a fish takes the bait. If you can find a calm pool with not a lot of folk around, it will be a great place to get some rest. If you do catch fish , that may be an additional advantage.

One very obvious hobby for girls after retirement is knitting. Well if the men have an interest in this spare time interest then there is nothing preventing you from picking up the knitting needles either. You need not target to become a perfectionist at knitting. Start at your own pace. Begin with any knit of your liking. As and when you understand the skill better, you can switch to knitting some clothing, scarves, table covers and 1 or 2 others. The idea is to keep your hands in motion and hence keep your mind busy. If you are too good at your practice, you can also consider presenting your loved ones some items that you have knitted on your own.

Yet one more spare time pursuit that you can take up after retirement is writing. You needn’t be a good writer and newshound for this reason. Simply maintain a personal diary and note down anything that you like or want. You can begin with writing about everyday experience, all bad and bad. You can also pen pen down the good and fun-filled times that you’ve had as a kid. Writing not only helps you utilize the time but also helps ward away stress from your life. Simply write your thoughts and unburden yourself of the countless feelings that that you are in grip of.

For folks that are not particularly fond of writing but want to do something on the same lines. Scrap books are a great option. All you have to do is collect all the photographs from your lifetime. Each of these has a memory locked in itself. Prepare a scrapbook of your life, of your youngsters growing up etc.

Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly is greatly impacted by several factors, one of them being a change in body composition. During the later years in life, the body will lose bone and muscle and gain fat because the hormones aren’t very active anymore. There are many factors which hinder an elderly person’s health. The information below will help you to lead a healthy life – no matter how old you may be.

Water
Water in the body decreases with age, so many older folks will become dehydrated very easily. Sometimes they won’t feel thirsty, while other times it’s too much work to pour a glass a water. With this in mind, it’s recommended that they drink at least 1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight.

Protein
At this stage in life, protein is very important. Protein is needed to support a healthy immune system and prevent the wasting of muscle. Since energy needs are less, older folks should eat high quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poulty, and fish.

Calcium
Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folks simply aren’t getting enough of. Most believe that milk upsets their stomach, and therefore they will avoid it.They should be getting around 1,500 mg of calcium a day, and nonfat powdered milk can be used in recipes as a substitute for milk. Other foods such as yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccoli can also help you meet the requirements for calcium.

Vitamin B12
In order to absorb the benefits of B12, the intrinsic facotr must be produced by the stomach. Most elderly people suffer from a deficiency in B12 because they have a condition known as atrophic gastritis. This condition causes inflammation of the stomach, bacterial overgrowth, and the intrinsic factor. Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be absorbed.

Many people loves fishing charter Auckland including serious lawyer Auckland and Hot Water Cylinders.

Life is just another adventure if you really look into its channels. On the first day we are born, we begin a new adventure to healthy aging. After a while, we take our first baby step. Our muscles, joints and bones have already started its progress of aging. Yet, we continue to use our muscles, joints and bones throughout our life to balance our weight. As we reach puberty, despite the notion that we maintained activities the muscles, joints, and bones begin to degenerate. After puberty the declination continues, which our body and minds start weakening.

Throughout our life, we depend on soluble fats to reduce heart disease. We depend nutrients that prevent high cholesterol, which affects so many of us by not eating and exercising correctly. We understand that incorporating the right amount of fibers into our bodies daily will add bulk to our stools. It will speed up to come through and out of our body. High-Fiber diets are something we rely on to slow cholesterol in which the liver produces. We use fibers to keep down the levels of cholesterol, which if increased we know can block the arteries. Throughout our youthful days, our body changes, yet as we reach age 35 the same body we took time to maintain starts to decline, i.e. the bodily functions start to decline despite the notion that we took time to provide what our bodies needed.

Along some time in our life we ask, do I need to lose weight? Many of us ask these questions followed by food binges, ignoring meals, and sitting on the couch hoping that we lose weight. Well couch potatoes, you missed the point, yet help has arrived. High fiber foods links to potential weight loss and control. Because fibers carry through our bodies, it takes some excess calories along the way. Foods that are high in soluble fat are more filling, we eat less of them, and there is the lost of more calories. When trying to lose weight be sure to consult with you doctor before hand, because it might not be the best choice for you. Diet supplements can be harmful even the fiber ones.

It can be quite tough dealing with the realisation that someone you know is beginning to show the inevitable signs of aging. There will be someone in your life be it a family member or a friend who starts to struggle with every day life simply because of their age.

In my case it was my mother. You expect people to get somewhat deaf as they get older and at first you just accept the situation. You just speak up and speak that little bit more slowly.

However it became a real problem when she stopped hearing her phone ringing, not all the time but often. We have a regular time when I ring and so she’d be sitting there waiting for my call but would fail to hear the phone ring. I’d ring again and still get no reply and would have to wait for her to phone me to ask me why I hadn’t phoned. Then I’d point out that I had called her.

We tried turning up the volume on her phone to the maximum but that didn’t help much. She still kept missing calls.

So I started to look round for phones for the hard of hearing that would help the situation. Of course I needed one that had a very louder ringer which they all seem to have, which is good.

The buttons on the phone had to be large as well. My mother has poor eyesight so needs all the help she can get to stop her pushing the wrong number though, of course, her usual numbers went on speed dial.

As she could hear quite well once she had picked up the phone I didn’t go for one of the high amplification range. I just chose a medium amplified phone which she could turn on if she was having a bad hearing day.

All in all she’s very happy with her new hard of hearing phone as it looks like a normal phone and she’s able to use it without much fuss. And at her age that’s exactly what you want. And everyone else is happy because she now picks up the phone when they ring.

Aging isn’t a sudden process. It gradually creeps up on all of us. Everyday tasks start to take longer to do and they also take a lot more effort.

You find that when you’re out shopping it takes longer to get those coins out of your purse. When you go to open a tin can you grab your can opener and now it takes you a few attempts to latch it on and then the turning of the handle takes longer and longer and requires more and more effort.

Reading starts to become more problematic as our eyes too start to slow down. With age eyes slow down when it comes to focusing as well as them needing more and more light to see well.

Loss of hearing is also a common difficulty. The loss can be so slow developing that it’s only when you stop noticing the phone ringing that you realise that you’ve got a bit of a problem.

If you want things to improve you need to make yourself aware of the problems you’re having. That way you can do something about it.

If you find using a can opener means you always spill things and it make your hands ache then get an electric can opener that will make your life easier.

Get yourself some better lighting. Just changing your bulbs to daylight spectrum ones can make a huge impact on your ability to see print on paper while you read.

If you keep missing the sound of your phone ringing then opt of one the phones for the hard of hearing that are available. Along with higher ring tone volumes they will also amplifiy the voices if you want.

By assessing what you do regularly and what things are causing you problems you can often change to items or products that will suit you better. Whether you go for talking watch, you’ll find something suitable for you.

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to end up relying on others for small every tasks, technology is here to help you.

The majority of the 4.5 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, where family and friends provide most of their care. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive brain disorder that not only affects memory, but gradually destroys a person’s ability to learn and carry out daily activities, can be emotionally and physically challenging. As memory loss and other symptoms worsen, the amount of time and energy caregivers and families spend taking care of their loved one increases. The Memories to Treasure program provides people who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s tips on caregiving and information about the disease, while helping them connect with their loved one through the art of scrapbooking. “Alzheimer’s caregivers have unique needs; Memories to Treasure offers resources to help facilitate interaction with loved ones,” says Gail Hunt, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving. “Engaging in meaningful activities, such as scrapbooking, allows time spent together to be more positive and can benefit everyone involved.”

While people with mild Alzheimer’s disease often experience problems with short-term memory, they may recall memories from the distant past. Looking at old photographs and keepsakes may lead to conversations about people and past events, and can be enjoyable for everyone involved. “Activities, such as scrapbooking, can be beneficial for families facing Alzheimer’s disease,” says Benjamin Seltzer, M.D., director of the Alzheimer’s Disease & Memory Disorders Center, Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. “Engaging in meaningful activities with a loved one is only one facet of caregiving; however, it is also important to know that there are treatments available that can help slow symptoms of the disease.” Memories to Treasure can be accessed online at totreasure.com. The Web site offers tips on caregiving, information about Alzheimer’s disease and a Memory Checklist to help guide discussion with a physician. Caregivers will also find instructions to create a scrapbook with a loved one facing Alzheimer’s disease. Memories to Treasure is brought to the Alzheimer’s community by Eisai Inc. and Pfizer Inc, in partnership with the National Alliance for Caregiving and Creating Keepsakes scrapbook magazine. Dr. Seltzer’s participation in Memories to Treasure has been sponsored by Eisai and Pfizer.

When people grow to the age where a caregiver is necessary to perform everyday needed activities, a trained and qualified caregiver is called in. However, often times there are problems that arise due to caregiver neglect, self-neglect, and resistance to asking for help. These problems can have disastrous effects on the one receiving care.

Caregiver Neglect.

Caregiver neglect leads to patients being “imprisoned by their own environment.” This happens when caregivers spend minimal time in the morning, afternoon, and evening feeding and taking care of the needs of the elders, then ignore them the rest of the time. They give them no social activity, or exercise, and patients are stuck sleeping or watching tv all day. Their only exercise is getting up to use the restroom and they often suffer of poor nutrition and dehydration.

Patients stuck in this prison, often times do whatever is necessary to avoid going to the bathroom or soiling their diaper. They stop eating as much and drink less. This results in malnutrition and dehydration and poor mental stupor for patients.

The solution to this problem often times is putting patients in a good adult day services center where they can be stimulated socially in the environment of other seniors and activities. Otherwise, families will need to sacrifice, and spend money to bring in a full-time aid to provide adequate care.

Self-Neglect

Self-Neglect is another problem that arises from poorly trained caregivers. Caregivers are often hired to keep seniors accountable in taking care of themselves and their homes. This can mean ensuring that they are eating properly, drinking enough, and attending to personal hygiene.

However, if the caregiver is not stimulating patients to take care of themselves, the patients often wont do it and are left in a pitiful state. Self-neglect is a form of elder abuse, and should be reported in states that require it. Caregivers found in this state can be criminally charged.

Failure to Bring in Help

Failure to bring in help is the last, and possibly most common problem. Caregivers, perhaps to save money for families to because they believe they can handle it themselves, will not ask for help when it is required. This can be caused by a loved one that becomes so involved that they separate themselves from others and end up not being able to ask for help. Or it can be caused by a child trying to provide long term care. Regardless of the cause, it is an important one that can have drastic consequences.

The Seattle Times recently published an article an article about the neglect in the home of on of our “neighbors” in Tacoma. This is the home of Arlie and Charlene Leno called Narrows View Manor. In this home a terrible event has occurred recently, sprung on by years of neglect and violations. We as an adult family home feel we should do our part to spread the news of this horrible tragedy, to prevent future occurances.

Narrows View Manor, owned by the Lenos, have had a long history of violations in the boarding home they started in 1990, Tule Lake Manor, and in the adult family hom they own, called Narrows View Manor. Their residents are very similar to the ones that we have in our home, ranging from the bed bound to those with alzheimer’s and serious needs. Apparently, the DSHS, cited Leno for over 18 violations (we have had none) for Tule Lake Manor. Issues with staff, poor safety environment, and negligence. Eventually, he was given the option is either sell his business, or fight a revocation. He eventually sold his business.

While Leno was required to sell his boarding home business, he was allowed to keep and continue his adult family home, which he started in 1995. Apparently, he hadn’t changed his ways, and the violations continued. DSHS did little to stop them, citing the violations as minor, and fining him a couple hundred dollars each time. His violations include hiring staff with drug abuse history, and sneaking extra residents into the facility.

In 2006, Leno committed the most brazen violation, which has lead to the writing of this blog post. One resident, McSherry, developed a pressure sore. The daughters of the resident caught the problem early one and called in a nurse to treat her. The nurse treated the bed sore and taught the staff at Leno’s home how to deal them pressure sores. Confidant that she was in good hands, the nurse went on her way. A little while later the sore reappeared. The staff put ointment on the pressure sore, something that made the sore worse in fact, and never reported the health concern. Finally months later, McSherry finally told her daughters that her bottom hurt, and to their shock, they discovered a quarter sized ulcer. This lead to the death of McSherry on October 20, 2006. The DSHS responded by fining Leno $3,200 – the cost of a life apparently.

We as an adult family home takes issues like this to heart. We are passionate about providing proper care for residents. We are advocates of tougher DSHS regulations such as the required to publicize all adult family home violations.

If you feel your loved one is not getting proper care, please call us and we’ll guide you to the steps you need to take.
